Gaston County Athletes Could Face Drug Tests

Posted Updated

GASTONIA — Drug tests are also on the drawing board for student athletes in Gaston County. The school district is the first in the state to test high school athletes for steroids use.

The names of the 3,200 male and female athletes in the county's public schools will be put into a computer and chosen at random.

Athletes picked will be tested for 15 types of steroids plus alcohol and other drugs. Athletes found using drugs or steroids will be suspended for up to two games for their first offense.

A third offense could get an athlete banned for the rest of their prep career.
