Raleigh Police Investigate Murder at Chavis Heights Park

A passerby on the way to work found a female body in Chavis Heights Park Thursday morning that has now been identified as 26-year-old Tammy Jane Allen of Raleigh.

Police say the tunnel running underneath Martin Luther King Boulevard and Garner Road is the scene of a murder investigation.

Investigators still do not know how Allen died, but they say it happened sometime overnight.

At least a 500-yard radius has been blocked off to search for clues.

"We searched all this area because we're not sure exactly where this crime -- you know it could have taken place where she is now or it could have started two or 300 yards away," says Lt. Gerald Britt.

The body was found in a heavily-traveled southeast Raleigh area.

Robert Hill says a murder here does not surprise him. "Drugs are terrible up that way," he says.

Debra Blackmon says an isolated incident should not erase all the progress that has been made in the neighborhood, though.
