19 Children Transported to Hospital After Vance County School Bus Overturns

print friendly

More than a dozen Vance County children were treated for injuries suffered after their school bus overturned on its way home from school in Middleburg Monday afternoon.

The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. near East Spain Middleburg and Flemingtown Roads. This is off exit 220 of Interstate 85, just northeast of Henderson.

The children were returning home from E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School, when their school bus rolled onto its side to the shoulder of the road.

The bus driver swerved to avoid hitting a dog in the road.

Thirty-nine children were taken off of the bus. Nineteen of the students were transported from the crash site to Maria Parham Hospital.

Hospital officials say all the children have been released from the hospital. The most serious injury was a third-grader who broke his ankle.

The superintendent of Vance County schools says the driver has a perfect driving record. The state Highway Patrol says no charges will be filed in the case.
