Suspect Surrenders After Police Canvas Neighborhood

They say that pictures, people and pressure finally forced Efrain Nicolas Zuniga to turn himself in.

Durham police had been searching for Zuniga after two brothers were shot, one of them fatally, at a busy intersection Thursday.

It all began at the intersection of Alston Avenue and Liberty Street when shots were fired.

Right away, Durham police say they knew their suspect and knew where he lived.

For three days, officers say they patrolled the eastside neighborhood where Zuniga lived.

"We were talking with residents in the immediate area," said Cpl. Joseph Kelly of the Durham Police Department. "We were just trying to gather information as to the whereabouts of the suspect."

Then on Sunday afternoon Zuniga turned himself in to police.

"With the increased presence of both the police and citizens knowing information about the suspect, the area around him was drawn in and he began to feel the pressure," Kelly said. "We just hope that the residents of northeast central Durham will continue to provide us with the support that they've given us in our efforts to stomp out the crime."
