HARNETT COUNTY — A 15-year-old girl is dead after she pulled into the path of a tractor trailer truck, state troopers say.
The accident occurred early Thursday evening on US 421 in Harnett County. Troopers say Krystal Childs, of Olivia, was driving on a learner's permit with her mother Holly Mason. The truck hit the Explorer that Childs was driving in the driver's side door.
Childs was airlifted to Duke Medical Center where she died Friday evening. Mason is in stable condition at a Harnett County hospital.
Troopers say it turns out the truck driver, Rodney Milton Cole of Carthage, is a good friend of the teen's father. Cole was treated for minor injuries.
