The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review the mysterious death of a man involved in a struggle with Fayetteville police officers.

Police identified the man who died as 37-year-old Anthony King.

Officer Kenneth Alston says he was driving his cruiser early Monday morning when he spotted King and another person at the Texaco on the corner of Owen Drive and Cumberland Road. Alston says the men appeared to be using drugs, so he stopped to investigate.

One suspect fled the scene after being handcuffed. Alston says King collapsed after they struggled.

"There was not an escalation of weapons used. Mr. King collapsed quickly after the struggle ensued, and at that point, the officer responded by calling for medical assistance," said Lt. Katharine Bryant of the Fayetteville Police Department.

King later died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

As a matter of routine, Alston is on administrative duty.
