WILSON — A 20-mile-long stretch of highway linking Zebulon to Wilson has a new name.
U.S. Highway 264 is now the Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. Highway. State officials uncovered the first sign Thursday afternoon during a brief ceremony in Wilson.
The outgoing governor says he is honored to have his name on the road that connects his hometown to the Triangle.
"It makes me think of far we've come," he says. "We've done so many things to improve our schools, to have more good jobs and to preserve this environment God gave us, but we've got a long way to go."
Hunt still owns a cattle ranch just a few miles west of Wilson. Highway 264 continues east to Greenville and eventually the Outer Banks.
