Cary Tears Down 2 Abandoned Homes

Posted Updated

CARY — Two abandoned houses in the 300 block of Walker Street are being demolished to make room for new, moderately priced housing.

One building came down Friday, while crews removed asbestos from the other.

The demolition ends a six-year battle. Since late 1993, town officials have been fighting the property owner to bring the houses up to code. Last month, the owner was bought out.

Cary officials are working to revitalize the area. The demolition meets two of the town's goals: to make downtown more attractive and to offer good homes at a reasonable price.
