Nicholson Trial Halted by Request for Mental Evaluation

Posted Updated

SHARPSBURG — The Sharpsburg man accused of a 1997 double murder wants to be re-examined before the trial goes on.

Just before noon Wednesday, the judge sent the jury home and granted a motion that Abner Nicholson's mental capacity be re-evaluated. Nicholson admits to shooting his wife and Sharpsburg Police Chief Wayne Hathaway, but says he did it in self-defense.

The jury will return Monday morning.
