Some Residents Offer 'Fair' Parking for a Price

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Everyone has probably heard the saying, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," and some people living near the fairgrounds are doing just that.

For many years, some people who live right across the street from the State Fair have turned all the noise and traffic into a business.

They have turned their yards into parking lots. For the spaces they offer close to the entry gates, you will have to pay $5 or $6.

The neighbors help each other out with the parking business. They say their service offers added security.

"We kind of walk around the neighborhood and keep an eye on things. We don't want any riff-raff coming in and messing up a good thing," said John Dunson.

Dunson says he makes enough money over the 10 days to pay his property taxes and take his family on vacation.
