An anonymous tip led investigators to 29-year-old Gregory Williams of Smithfield. Police say he is the man caught on a store surveillance tape stealing a collection jar for flood victims at a Selma gas station.
Williams allegedly got away with more than $100. He is charged with larceny and is being held in the Johnston County jail.
Clerks at the Amoco station set out the jar last week to collect money for flood victims. They discovered it was missing on Sunday morning.
"I went back and reviewed my video, and sure enough I found about 9:30 at night that fellow took it right off the counter and went right out the door," says store manager Sheila Davis.
Employees say they will continue their collection efforts and will keep a closer eye on the jar and people in the store.
