PRINCEVILLE — A town that nearly disappeared more than two years ago celebrated its 116th birthday Tuesday.
Most of Princeville's 700 families are back after the 1999 flood that drowned the Edgecombe County town. Other families are still living in FEMA trailer parks.
The number of people in permanent homes will jump dramatically in the next few months as apartment buildings are rebuilt. More than 150 families will then have a permanent place to call home.
If money is available, two big projects will be in the works for Princeville. Water and sewer lines would be repaired, and bigger ditches will be cut, which could help prevent minor flooding in the future.
