RALEIGH — The state may pull the plug on deals between school districts and soft drink companies.
Some lawmakers want to prevent any more school districts from signing contracts like Wake County's $3-million deal with Pepsi. Critics say that caffine and sugar in soft drinks are not good for growing teens.
"I would like to see all foods and drinks sold in schools to have nutritional value," said Dr. Robert Schwartz, a pediatrician. "On school grounds, I think we should encourage our children to eat healthy."
The proposed moratorium would not affect soda contracts that have already been signed.
