Eighteen school nurses funded by theCumberland County Health Departmenthave been told they are out of a job June 30. Special needs nurses will stay on the job.
All county agencies are required to cut their budgets by 18 percent for the coming year.
Health Director Janet Lindbloom says in putting together a bare-bones budget, non-mandated programs, like school nurses, have to go.
Nurses say they are always in demand and cannot imagine who will take care of the students.
The school system says it will try to put the nursing jobs into its budget, despite the county-ordered cutbacks.
Right now,Cumberland County schoolshave to share nurses. Eight schools share one nurse. That is about one nurse for every 4,500 students.
