FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. — A 22-month-old child died in Franklin County Thursday afternoon after drowning in a pond.
Authorities say Melondy Pearce wandered outside her home on Rebecca Lane west of Bunn around 2:30 p.m. Her mother and grandfather found her floating in a pond about 50 yards away shortly afterward. The child was transported to Franklin Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department has ruled Melondy's death accidental, and don't plan to file charges at this time. A funeral will be held for the toddler at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest on Monday afternoon.
