Halifax Deputies Charge Man in Shooting Death of Woman

Posted April 30, 2007

— A 23-year-old man was being held on a murder charge Monday evening in the shooting death of a woman he lived near, Halifax County sheriff's deputies said.

They arrested Courtney Hawkins at his home on Justice Branch Road  several hours after they found Shinetta McDaniel, 21, dead in her home on South Clanton Drive, deputies said. They had been called to McDaniel's home about a shooting shortly before 2 p.m., they said, but they did not disclose who had made the call.

Lt. Bruce Temple said deputies used a police dog to track down the handgun they believe was used in the slaying. It was found in a wooded area behind Hawkins's home, Temple said.

Deputies who found McDaniel attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not revive her, officials reported. She had suffered a single bullet wound to the torso, they said.

Hawkins was held without bond and was expected to be arraigned Tuesday, Temple said.

I just want to say that the family of the victim is in my prayers and I hope that Courtney get whats coming to him. I knew the victim and she didn't deserve the pain he put her or her family through. And hope that the men in jail have a nice time passing him around the cell.

Yet another case of young senseless violence. Now he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Whatever the dispute I am sure it wasnt worth his freedom. Now he can reminisce of it while sitting on a cot in cell block C. Geeez..what a waste.

It is sad especially when you know the people. As a citizen of Halifax County this really touched me, for I never could imagine that he would do something this extreme. I know the defendant on a personal basis so it really caught me by suprise. My heart and prays go out to the families.
