A teenager who was driving a car during a wreck that killed a friend was charged in connection with the wreck, authorities said Thursday.

Authorities say that Brandy Lee, 16, was driving a car too fast when it collided with another in Clayton last week. Leah Boykin, 17, who was a passenger in Lee's car, died in the crash.

Lee was charged Wednesday with exceeding safe speed, driving left of center and misdemeanor death by vehicle, said Sgt. Taylor with North Carolina Highway Patrol in Johnston County.

The green Honda Civic was traveling east on Wilson Mills Road last Wednesday around 10 a.m. when, authorities said, it spun out of control around a curve, crossed the center line and hit a white Chevrolet Impala traveling west.

The Impala was driven by 62-year-old Lonnie Locklear, who was injured.

The students were on their way to classes at the Middle College on the Johnston Community College campus, friends said.
