DURHAM — A Durham man who admitted to raping a 7-year-old girl is out of jail on probation.
Ricky Sewell, 19, was originally charged with first-degree rape and two other serious sex offenses.
The victim's family asked that the charges be downgraded so that the child would not have to testify. The charges were reduced to taking indecent liberties with a child.
Judge Orlando Hudson freed Sewell Monday on a five-year probation. He has to undergo sex offender treatment, and he must stay away from children younger than 16.
WRAL could not reach Hudson for comment Tuesday. Some other members of the community are speaking out, though.
"You have a 7-year-old girl who's depending on the system to protect her," said community activist Herman Davenport. "It seems they disappointed her."
Sewell has 10 days to register as a sex offender in the North Carolina.
