RALEIGH — The state quarter craze is about to reach a fevered pitch in North Carolina. A quarter commemorating the Tar Heel state was unveiled in Raleigh Monday.
The U.S. Mint is issuing quarters commemorating each state. North Carolina is the 12th quarter released in the series. It features the Wright Brothers' 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk.
"It has re-ignited coin collecting. 125 million people now tell us they're collecting these state quarters. Today, they add North Carolina," says Jay Johnson, director of the U.S. Mint.
The North Carolina quarters are available now, although many people are no doubt holding onto them as souvenirs.
The quarters can be ordered directly from the U.S. Mint. Call1-800-USA-MINTor visit itsWeb site.
