CARY — The man Cary police believe committed the town's first murder in five years is now in custody.
Phillip Vance Smith turned himself in to officials at the Wake County Public Safety Center in Raleigh just after midnight. He was wanted for the weekend murder of Rico Ronnell Waters, 24, of Pisgah Forest.
Waters died of a gunshot to the head. He was found slumped over in a car at the Woodcreek Apartments Saturday morning.
Smith, who has a criminal record, is being charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond pending his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
Waters is the first person to be murdered in Cary since December 31, 1995.
