CHAPEL HILL — Chapel Hill-Carrboro's teacher of the year will soon find out whether she is the best educator in the state.
The N.C. Teacher of the Year committee has chosen Julie Durmody, a fifth grade teacher atScroggs Elementary School, as one of six regional finalists for the state's teacher of the year.
Durmody represents the Central region which includes Durham, Wake, Johnston and Wilson Counties. She was chosen from a group of 20 local candidates.
Durmody's fifth grade students say they are inspired by their teacher's enthusiasm for any subject, especially writing. The 19-year teaching veteran says she is thrilled when her students see their own progress.
The winner will be announced May 1. The title comes with a check for $5,000.
