CARY — Cary police are hoping the public can help solve the town's first murder in five years.

Police found the body of Rico Ronnell Waters, 24, of Pisgah Forest, at the Woodcreek Apartments in east Cary Saturday morning.

Waters was found alone, slumped over in the passenger's seat of the car around 5:00 a.m., dead from a gunshot to the head.

Police believe Waters had been staying with friends in the Triangle when he borrowed a 1991 black Nissan Maxima from Michael Anthony Kulian of Apex.

Kulian turned himself into police, and has been charged with false pretense in connection with a January credit card incident. Police are not calling him a suspect in the murder.

Police believe Waters was shot early Friday night. They say that it may have been a drug-related business transaction gone bad. Neighbors say they heard gunshots Friday evening, but no one notified police. It is Cary's first homicide since December 1995.

Neighbors are shocked.

"It's a fairly quiet neighborhood, and nobody bothers anybody here," one resident said. "It's shocking it happened so close to where somebody lives."

Investigators are encouraging anyone in the area who knew Waters or saw him on Friday to contact Cary police at919-469-4012or CrimeStoppers at919-226-CRIME.

CrimeStoppers is offering up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest.
