WILSON, N.C. — A Wilson man wanted in connection with the beating death of an off-duty detention officer was arrested Friday night, police said.

Ricky Gene Watson Jr., 24, of 2509 Marybeth Court, Apt. B, was apprehended by members of the U.S. Marshal's Service Violent Fugitive Task Force as he was trying to leave the state, police said.

Jerry Glenn Young Jr., 25, was found beaten early Sunday in the 2900 block of Summerfield Drive and was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville with head injuries, police said.

Watson was initially arrested Wednesday and charged with assault inflicting serious injury in connection with the fight that led to Young's injuries, as well as some unrelated drug charges, police said. Watson posted a $40,000 bond and was released.

Young, a detention officer at the Wilson County Detention Center, died Thursday night, and the assault charge against Watson was upgraded to second-degree murder.

Watson is being held in the Nash County Detention Facility on a $250,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Also, Jeremy Richard Barnes, 26, of 3201 Corbett Ave. in Elm City, was charged with being an accessory after the fact of second-degree murder. He is being held in the Robeson County Detention Facility.
