Red Crossvolunteers are setting up a makeshift kitchen at the First Baptist Church in Wilson. Volunteers from Kentucky drove fully-equipped tractor-trailers and are busy providing home-cooked meals.
"We've got two cookers and two big frying pans ... We can put out 500 chicken breasts in an hours," says volunteer Ken Hinton.
What is on the stove? Thirty cans of chicken and dumplings, 80 gallons of green beans. It is enough to feed 600 people lunch.
The Hillis family has no electricity and no running water. They are happy for a hot meal.
While many meals will be served at the First Baptist Church, the rest will be transported to shelters to feed hundreds of people who still cannot go home.
These volunteers will not be going home anytime soon, either. They will be in town until the disaster is over.
"If it's two weeks, then we'll do it," says volunteer Owen Collins.
There are six Red Cross kitchens set up from Wilson to the coast.
