Raleigh Church and Temple Come Together to Celebrate Rosh Hashanah

Rain soaked the lobby area of Temple Beth Or, causing the ceiling to nearly cave in.

So this year, the congregation is celebrating the Jewish New Year at nearby White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

"The the physical body is different, but I think that in a lot of ways it's really the same because you're bringing together people for worship and celebrate the new year. I think the goals are always the same. I think that the building really doesn't matter," says Mark Newman, a member of Temple Beth Or.

Holding services at the church was not the only change.

Rabbi Lucy Dinner normally has a security guard to help with the crowds and parking. But in light of recent synagogue attacks, she hired an extra guard this year.

"We added another one to alleviate any fears people might have. There haven't been any threats that our congregation has experienced personally," she says.

People of Jewish faith are celebrating the Year 5760.

Beginning at sundown, Rosh Hashana marks the beginning of the High Holy Days -- a ten-day period that culminates September 20 with Yom Kippur.
