GARNER — A man is in custody this morning after smashing his car into a transformer box in Garner, causing hundreds ofCarolina Power & Lightcustomers to lose power.

Police say Michael Tennis, 21, was driving recklessly in a parking lot near the Wal-Mart in Garner. They say Tennis was speeding away from police when he smashed his car into a transformer box shortly after midnight.

The car then burst into flames. The driver was not injured in the accident and ran from police into the woods.

Authorities caught up with Tennis and arrested him. He has been charged with reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, and damaging property.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

CP&L representatives say power was knocked out to more than 600 customers in the Garner area. Power was restored to all of the Garner residents around 1:00 a.m.
