VANCE COUNTY — Twin 11-year-old brothers accused of shooting their father to death, and wounding their mother and sister, faced a judge Tuesday during a hearing to determine when their trial would take place.

The judge set the trial date for August 2. Prosecutors pushed for a fast trial, while attorneys for the boys asked for more time to determine why the shooting happened.

The judge also ruled that the two boys be tried together, in spite of a defense argument for separate trials. Lawyers for the boys say only one of the pre-teens was the shooter.

Although there is a gag order in the case, the prosecutor did respond to the ruling to try the boys together. "I believe that that represents the best outcome for the state's case and for the court to consider the culpability of each party," said District Attorney David Waters.

There is no word on whether the trial will be open to the public.

The boys are being held in juvenile custody until the case is resolved.
