Fire Leaves Seven Families Homeless

Posted Updated

FUQUAY VARINA — Seven families are without a home after fire destroyed an apartment building off Stone Path Drive in Fuquay Varina Sunday night.

Around 8 p.m., a half-dozen fire crews from Fuquay Varina and Wake County were called to the Cobblestone Apartments to get a handle on some big flames lapping out of a second-floor apartment.

Within an hour the blaze was under control.

No one was hurt, but the people who lived in the scorched apartments were still shaken..

"It's like a nightmare," said Gurtha Brunson, whose home was destroyed. "I don't know what we will do. There's nothing I can do about it though. It could have been worse. It could have been my family in there, but we were out safe. My family's alive, and that's all that matters."

Investigators do not have the cause of the fire, but will continue to look.

"We do believe that it's going to be something that's accidental in nature, but to conclusively say, we're going to have to come back tomorrow and continue the investigation in the daylight hours," said Dept. Fire Marshal Rick Dorsey.

Dorsey said it was a miracle that the one person in the apartment where the fire originated came out alive.
