DURHAM — Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday reports of a fireball in the sky began coming in from Durham County.

Witnesses say they saw a ball of fire followed by a green tail in the sky over Highway 501, north of Bahama.

A command post was immediately set up near the highway. However, no planes were reported missing, so searchers did not know what they were looking for.

About 30 searchers headed out into the forested area anyway, and a helicopter was called in.

"It appears to be some type of meteor that everybody had seen," says Chief Len Needham with the Bahama Fire Department. "We've had reports from other areas, as far away as Raleigh and Sanford, describing the same thing."

Rescue crews did not determine what fell out of the sky Wednesday night, but they are fairly certain that it was not an airplane. They said a crew will probably return Thursday morning to search the area again.
