State Objects to Ruling That Would Recognize Tribe

Posted Updated

HILLSBOROUGH — The Occaneechi tribe's battle to be recognized isn't over yet.

North Carolina is officially objecting to a December ruling that would grant the small band of Indians official status as a tribe.

The distinction would give the group access to state and federal funds and a seat on the Indian affairs commission.

The commission will consider the issue at its June meeting.

It has ruled against the idea twice since 1990.

The Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation is based mainly around Hillsborough.
