Plug May Be Pulled on Booming Stereos

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Does your vehicle have a standard-issue radio or cd? Or are you tooling around town with sub-woofers that can knock out 130 decibels, and send other drivers into orbit with the roar?

Drivers in the first category are increasingly irritated by drivers in the second. Also irritated are homeowners whose peace is ruptured by cars whose stereos sound like thunder.

Achieving such a drive-by chest-thumping sound is easy, thanks to microchips in today's stereo amplifiers. Getting away from it is not so easy.

That's why Raleigh's city Council is considering a noise ordinance that would crack down on the volume of car stereos.

The proposal would prohibit music that's audible more than 50 feet away from a vehicle.

The proposed penalty would be a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.

The council may put the measure to a full vote Tuesday.

Cary and Durham already have similar ordinances on the books.
