FAYETTEVILLE — An unidentified man was hit and killed by a train in Cumberland County Friday night, but there are conflicting reports about exactly what happened.
Train engineers called medics after hitting the man shortly after 9 p.m.. One engineer says that the man appeared to have been dead before they hit him.
However, a sheriff's deputy said that another engineer believes the man walked into the path of the oncoming train.
Investigators believe that the man had alcohol on him and was sitting on the tracks eating food when the train hit him.
The train was a full Amtrak passenger train that was headed east.
There is no word on whether the accident could turn into a homicide investigation.
