Postal Service Santas Sponsor Shopping Spree for Wake Families

Posted Updated

GARNER — Many kids are disappointed Christmas morning, when their hopes meet with reality. But thanks to employees of the RaleighPostal Service, three families will be smiling as brightly this holiday as the lights on their trees.

A committee of Postal employees chose the three families out of a list provided by Wake Social Services. "We're not just about mail all the time," says Dwight Rogers, a member of the committee. "We try to help families along the way."

The families are grateful. Karen Oliver, Sheila Dean, and Gwendolyn Hunter each spent part of Thursday morning going on a $1,000 shopping spree at SuperK-Mart.

"I didn't know what I was going to do this year for my kids," Oliver says. "We're living paycheck to paycheck [with] bills and rent. This year my son's wishes are definitely going to come true." So will her infant daughter's.

Sheila Dean says she cried when she found out about the gift. Dean is caring for her three grandchildren, and appreciates people sharing their good fortune. "This is really nice for people to do this," Dean says.

Gwendolyn Hunter has six grandchildren depending on her. Her gifts are very practical. "They're going to get clothes," she says, "because they go to school year round, so they need clothes."

This is the fourth year the employees of the Raleigh Postal Service have participated in what they call their Holiday Cheer Program.
