Victim Identified in Johnston County Drowning

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — The victim in Saturday's drowning in Johnston County has been identified as 28-year-old Nathaniel Forbes of Willow Springs, N.C.

Detectives are calling the incident a drowning, but no one saw exactly what happened. They say that they are still a little suspicious.

Rescuers found the Forbes' boat upside down in the water. A search team dragged the bottom of Langdon's Pond, and discovered the body six hours later.

"Something was hooked on the drag, and they realized that they had something," Johnston County EMS worker Jeremy Beal said. "When they investigated what they got, they realized it was a person."

Beal said they believe that the victim was driving a red truck when he checked in at the pond's front gate to go fishing.

Sheriff deputies still have a lot of question about how Forbes drowned.

"It's pretty suspicious about how this happened," Beal said. "It is unusual for something like this to occur without an explanation. At this time, we don't have one." Reporter: Todd HauerPhotographer: Lynn French,Kelly Gardner
