Durham School System Under Investigation
Posted November 7, 1998
DURHAM — The federal Office of Civil Rights is investigating the entire Durham School System.
The Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People says the school system treats black students unfairly.
The committee claims a disproportionate number of African-American students are suspended or enrolled in special education classes.
The complaint also says black students are under-represented in extra-curricular activities and classes for the academically gifted.
