Posted Updated

RALEIGH — An elderly man died Friday morning at a local hospital after his West Raleigh apartment caught fire Thursday night.

Robert J. Burke died at Wake Medical Center about 6 a.m. Friday. He was inside the Oakdale apartment complex off Hillsborough Street when a fire started just after 10 p.m. Nearby residents called 9-1-1 after hearing the crackling of a fire and then seeing flames shooting out of the roof.

"We have extensive damage in all the apartments," said Ed Brinson of the Swift Creek Fire Department. "Fire spread from one end of the building to the other."

Firefighters say they don't know what caused the fire.
