Water Main Breaks in Chapel Hill, Road Closed

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — The Orange County Water and Sewer Authority worked Monday morning to fix a water main break in Chapel Hill.

The 8-inch line on Ephesus Church Road ruptured around 5:30 a.m.. Water service was shut off to ten homes. The Ephesus Elementary school was without water for about an hour until the Chapel Hill Fire Department came up with a creative solution.

"The Chapel Hill Fire Department came and provided us a lot of assistance," said Vic Simpson of the Water and Sewer Authority. "They hooked up to a hydrant that is located on the far side of the school that was still in service, and then they ran a hose through the meter just like normal water service would be delivered. [The school] was only out for about an hour."

The break is expected to be fixed by the end of the day, but the road between Church Hill Drive and Tinkerbell Road may be closed into the evening.
