Posted Updated

HENDERSON — Police are trying to identify a young black woman whose body was discovered early Monday morning on the grounds of Henderson Middle School.

Just before 7 a.m., a construction worker found the body on a building site next to Henderson Middle School. He immediately told the police.

An autopsy has been completed. Investigators have determined that the woman, an African-American, was between 20 and 25-years-old and had been dead for less than 36 hours. Police will not say how the woman died, but they do say she suffered a violent death.

Investigators spent the day canvassing the nearby neighborhood for clues. In some cases, they showed residents a picture of the woman after she had been attacked.

"We have been using photos in some cases but not just randomly. In situations where some people believe they may know the victim, we have used that," Henderson Police Chief Glenn Allen said.

Neighbors say besides a few mischievous pranks, their community is usually uneventful.

"I was, you know, very surprised, because this is just a very quite neighborhood. It's mostly just older people, people who've lived here for a long time," resident Dorothy Kittrell said.

The woman was described as:
  • 5 feet, 5 inches, 110 lbs.
  • Black Curly Hair with Brown ColoringShe was found wearing:
  • Black Tennis Shoes
  • Long, Brown Corduroy Pants
  • Light-Colored Short Sleeve Shirt with Cartoon Emblem
  • Anyone with information is urged to call the Henderson Police.

Crisis counselors were at Henderson Middle School to help students there deal with the discovery. The school's principal says crisis counselors will be there for a few days.
