Tennessee Governor Brings Clean-Air Pact

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Don Sundquist is coming to North Carolina this week to discuss clean air.

He is the governor of Tennessee and his state wants help from the Tar Heel state in protecting the Great Smoky Mountains from pollution.

Sundquist hopes to convince officials to sign off on a clean-air pact. It calls for early notification if an air-polluting industry wants to locate or expand near the park or other protected areas.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is shared by the two states, is the most visited national park in the country, and makes substantial contribution to each state's tourism revenues.
