Police say it happened just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the ten-mile marker, which is south of Lumberton.
Robeson County Sheriff's deputies say two law enforcement officers were shot. One was Robeson County Sheriff's deputy James Hunt, who was shot twice in the chest. The other, a training officer from Georgia, was shot in the leg.
Police say the two officers were patroling the highway and tried to pull over a car for speeding in excess of 100 miles-per-hour. The officers chased the car until it pulled over at exit 10 where shots were fired. However, police do not know the details of how the shootings took place.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot, and was captured with the aid of blood hounds around 10:45 p.m.. Police say that the suspect was also shot in the leg, and was taken to a hospital.
The deputy who was shot in the chest was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, and has been taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown, but officials on the scene say that he has stabilized.
The entire exit was taped off by 20 to 30 officers who began searching for evidence.
