FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County has shut down a crime-plagued motel where raw sewage has been spilling onto the property.

County officials served the notice Tuesday at the Town and Country Motel near U.S. Highway 301. The Sheriff's Office said it is had dozens of disturbance calls since Jan. 1, most relating to drugs and prostitution.

Officials said the sewage has been seeping into the ground and a nearby creek. Residents have complained about the odor in the area, and they say they are concerned about potential health risks.

Tenants living in the rented motel rooms have until Friday to vacate. In the meantime, efforts are under way to locate Anilkumar Patel, the owner of the motel, to inform him of the action being taken against his property.

Authorities have tried to contact Patel, but so far there has been no response.
