Lengthening Runway Hits Roadblocks

Posted Updated

SPRING LAKE — A plan to lengthen the runway at Pope Air Force Base is hitting a few roadblocks.

Fort Bragg and the town of Spring Lake back up to the base and both are raising concerns.

The runway extension can only go in two directions, either into Fort Bragg or into Spring Lake.

Air Force base officials say the extension is needed for the huge transport planes that take troops from Fort Bragg all over the world.

But Bragg officials worry the extension could affect nearby firing ranges, and town officials are concerned about its effects on a nearby subdivision.
