— A teacher’s assistant with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school system was arrested Wednesday and fired by the school board Thursday for allegedly taking advantage of a 13-year-old girl.

Travis Thompson, 39, is charged with taking indecent liberties with a child and indecent exposure. The incident took place at McDougle Middle School, according to police.

The girl’s parents notified school officials last Friday. The teen told officers the incident happened in February while Thompson was working as a substitute teacher.

Last month, Thompson was hired full-time to work as a teacher’s assistant in the exceptional education program.

He is out on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be back in court next month.

This guy went about it all wrong. Since he was in Carrboro he should have claimed that he was investigating an alternate life style.

I watched the video on WTVD's website. He is soooo screwed.

You can home school your child and protect them for a while but eventually they have to go out into the real world. The key is to have a strong relationship so they can tell you when something like this goes on.

As far as the 10,000 bond, that is just silly. We should make it a little harder for people to get out of jail (in general). I think that we are way too easy on our criminals in NC. If this guy spent too much time in prison I am sure someone would punish him more than the courts ever would.

Redwarrior.... I meant to clarify.... They don't book them in the jail, the orginating agency does.

  • Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Apr 21, 2007

Redwarrior............ not in Orange County they don't. Unless of course it's the Sheriff's Office that originated the charge. Why would the jail book someone if they make bond while they are in the magistrate's office?

One of the many reasons for homeschooling. Either kids are getting killed at school (by other kids) or getting molested (by the ones we entrust the kids to.

Praying for the ones who always bring up race even when it's not a factor.

There is no justification for any teacher, male or female to do what Mr. Thompson is charged. Teachers are entrusted with helping mold our young people's lives. They are supposed to be our children's protectors while at school. They are PAID to be positive role models. Not prey upon them.

As for Al & Jesse (& don't forget Malik Shabaz), after the LaX fiasco, they NEED to make a stand in a situation like this to show they stand against ALL injustices. (I personnally could care less if I ever see or hear from any one of them again).
