$120 Million Wasted on Waste Dump
Posted August 8, 1998
RALEIGH — If legislators have their way, a waste dump will be jettisoned -- along with the $120 million several agencies have already invested in the project.
Legislators want to scrap the low level radioactive waste dump proposed for Wake County.
But rather than cut funds to the agency developing it, they're slashing money for the agencies that regulate it.
The proposed N.C. Senate budget removes $500,000.
The proposed House budget cuts more than $1 million.
North Carolina has spent about $40 million since 1986 developing the waste storage facility.
And the Southeast Compact Commission has spent $80 million.
