Morrisville Asks Schools to Move Bus Stops Off 8 Highways

The town board voted Thursday evening to ask the county Board of Education to cut down the number of stops on the busy roads on which the speed limits are 40 mph or more.

On the list of unwanted stops is on Morrisville Carpenter Road, where Anusha Vasudeva, 12, died when a minivan hit her as she was making her way to the bus.

For years, parents have argued the bus stop was putting their children's safety in jeopardy.

The board's resolution said it supports "providing reasonably close school bus stops in safer locations, such as inside of subdivisions."

Neighbors have tried before to raise the safety issue. In 2002, they attempted to get the bus stop moved, but Wake County school leaders deemed the current location safe.

Police said the middle school student did not look both ways before crossing, but parents in the Ridgemont subdivision said last week's accident should serve as a wake-up call to Wake County school leaders.

Many of the parents want the bus stop moved into their subdivision. Over the weekend, parents went door-to-door with a petition demanding the change.

A representative with Wake County schools said the school system is reviewing parents' concerns, along with others like it in the area.
