Durham Officer Shoots Suspect

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Gunfire erupted in Durham Saturday night when an officer shot a man who was threatening him with a knife.

Two officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Liberty Street. Officers say a man was threatening a woman with a knife and refused to drop the weapon.

"The gentleman who was involved in the domestic disturbance advanced upon the police officer with a knife," Durham Police Cpl. Fran Borden said. "The police officer repeatedly told him to drop the knife. At that point the police officer found himself to be in imminent danger, and fired twice striking the suspect, I believe in the lower abdomen."

The two officers who responded to the scene are being questioned. Durham police tell us that is standard procedure when an officer fires his gun.

Durham police said that the suspect's wounds are not life threatening.
