Wilmington lawyer Michael Mills, 41, resigned Friday, following a court conviction in Wake County.
He was convicted Thursday of shoplifting a $19 camisole from a Hudson-Belk department store. Mills says he will appeal and calls the charges "false," even though a store videotape caught him putting a woman's camisole in a bag without paying for it.
Mills is the third board member to leave amid allegations of ethical or criminal wrongdoing in the past year.
He had served on the board less than a year. Mills had been nominated by Senate President Marc Basnight and appointed by the General Assembly to the board post.
