Galloping for the Gold

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Dozens of superb athletes are galloping for the gold at the state fairgrounds this weekend.

Sixty-four athletes from 17 counties are competing in the Special Olympics North Carolina Equestrain Championships. The event features some difficult courses and showmanship requirements.

"We have several different types of obstacles out there which they have to navigate, some with help and some independently. It's quite a challenge and the audience is really enjoying it," said Carol Theberge, the horse show director.

The competition wraps up Sunday with an awards ceremony. The gold-winning athletes will go on to compete in the Special Olympics World Games next summer.
