Missing Benson Man Found

BENSON — A missing 80-year-old Benson man has been found. Benson police found John M. Whitman about 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

Whitman had been last seen Friday morning walking along NC 27. Whitman has Alzheimer's disease, and he hadn't taken his medication in several days.

Authorities didn't say where Whitman was discovered, but they did say he was "as well as he could be" after wandering off for about 18 hours.

Whitman is well known in Benson and is often seen fishing and gardening at his home on West Harnett Street.
