Raleigh Leaders Issue Weight-Loss Challenge

Posted April 14, 2007

— Raleigh is weighing in on weight loss, as Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker unveiled a 60-day fitness challenge for city residents on Saturday.

A 672 sq. ft. billboard will be used to keep track of the total pounds lost during the campaign. About 2,000 participants have already signed up.

"Some of the fitness clubs got together with Wake County and some of the colleges and decided to see if we could get our community into better shape and lose some weight at the same time,” Meeker said.

The billboard, donated by Fairway Outdoor Advertising, will be placed on Capitol Boulevard near Buffalo Road.

I like that idea. Bet Weight Watchers would too.

I had an idea this morning that I know it will never happen, and there are probably many good reasons why it shouldn't, but I wonder what would happen to our obesity/overweight problem if only those over the age of 17 could purchase gas at a cost per gallon (in cents) equal to their weight. Example: I would have to pay over $2.50 per gallon. Uh oh, time to look into Weight Watchers again.
